There is no doubt that the first season of HBO's True Detective was a huge success. It has raked in millions of viewers who were glued to the edge of their seats by the exciting storyline. The presence of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the two main stars of the show, helped to boost the show's rating immensely.

The show is a creation of Nic Pizzolatto and was directed by Cary Fukunaga. The first season of the show wrapped up with 8 episodes with lots of surprising twists and changes to the original storyline, with Fukunaga saying that the first season was planned to follow a familiar pattern on paper but ended up taking a different route based on the strength of the on-screen performances.

Sadly, despite the huge success of the show garnered by the help of its main stars, they are no longer coming back. McConaughey has confirmed not coming back for the second season while Harrelson will most likely not come back as well. The supporting actress in the show was Michelle Monaghan, who delivered a very convincing performance throughout the series, and she might also not return for the season 2 premiere.

With the changes in the main leading cast, it is expected that bigger stars are coming to the rescue. Brad Pitt is the most resounding name as the top choice. He has previously worked with Ryan Murphy in the production of the HBO movie The Normal Heart. He is also expected to deliver a great job as a detective as he has already performed it in his role in Se7en.

If some other rumors are to be believed, the second season will not necessarily feature 2 men as the main detectives. There could be a female detective who will take on the other lead role. The release date of the next season is yet to be known, but a lot of avid viewers are already looking forward to it.
