Actress Meg Ryan and singer John Mellencamp have reportedly broken up after dating for three years, according to reports first posted from Closer Weekly.

The couple began seeing each other beginning in 2010 after Mellencamp divorced his then-wife Elaine Irwin after being married for 18 years. Ryan had previously married to actor Dennis Quaid.

Distance was a factor in the pair's decision to part ways, according to E! News. Former romcom princess Ryan lives in New York with her adopted daughter Daisy, and "Pink Houses" singer Mellencamp has a home in Indiana.

"I'm too sensitive to live there," the rocker told Rolling Stone in an interview in 2013. "I can't see poor people. I can't see the suffering. I can't see the trash on the streets."

When asked about living with Ryan in New York, Mellencamp said he's not willing to leave Indiana, saying, "I'm going to die here."

While the two were together, they remained fairly private about their relationship: only spotted on the streets in New York's SoHo together or spending time on Martha's Vineyard. The celebrity couple were last spotted out in public together in May.

"I don't think [John] loved all the attention he got just from dating an actress," a pal of Mellencamp said. "I bet he'll stay away from dating another famous person for a while."

"John was a classic romantic," the source said. "He was painting a portrait of Meg and wrote her love letters, and he said he was a better man because of her."

The 52-year-old actress and the 62-year-old singer are focusing on their individual upcoming projects. Ryan is directing a World War II period piece, starring Tom Hanks entitled "Ithaca," and Mellencamp is releasing his 22nd album "Plain Spoken" later this year.
