Millions of visitors gathering at New York's iconic Times Square to watch the ball drop on New Year's Eve will also be given an idea of where their next trip may take them as Peru's tourism authorities have made a big ad buy to promote the South American country.

Promperú, the promotion agency of Peru's Ministry of Foreign Commerce and Tourism, has booked three huge screens belonging to the Express and American Eagle stores and the ABC television network to promote the country brand and its slogan, "Peru, a country of hidden treasures," Tourism Minister and Promperú Chairwoman Magali Silva Velarde-Álvarez announced in a statement.

"These celebratory dates have their high point during the so-called 'ball drop' in the heart of Times Square, between 7 p.m. and midnight on Dec. 31, which is when (images) are transmitted across numerous (TV) channels across the United States," Silva explained. "That will allow us to reach more than 18 million people; therefore, and in order to achieve the maximum reach and visibility, we have also implemented an outreach program through the social network 'Twitter.'"

Users who communicate with @visitperu -- Promperú's official account -- using the hashtag #NewYearResolutions can have their tweets displayed on the American Eagle screen between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Dec. 31, the ministry explained. Tourism authorities came up with the social networking idea in order to help get as many people as possible involved in the promotional campaign.

"This interaction between the users and the Twitter account of Peru can be viewed on said screen, which will motivate users to actively participate (and help) achieve an emotional connection between potential tourists and the Peru brand with its attributes," Silva detailed. The effort would also mark a major contribution toward "promoting the country and increasing the number of U.S.-based fans of our social network (accounts,)" the official concluded.

The cost of Promperú's Dec. 31 campaign, meanwhile, was not disclosed.

Promperu also released a video depicting the ads they plan to screen during the event. Watch it below:
