On Tuesday Jan. 12, Telemundo will premiere its latest series, "La Querida del Centauro," which revolves around drug trafficking and the relationship between a drug lord and a female criminal.

According to Telemundo, the series stars Ludwika Paleta as Yolanda Acosta, a troubled, smart and determined criminal who is sent to one of Mexico's maximum security prisons. While there, she meets the most powerful drug trafficker, Benedictino García, known as "El Centauro," played by Humberto Zurita.

Yolanda becomes his lover, which gives her power while in prison but later complicates things when she and "El Centauro" escape and she is used as bait by detective Gerardo Duarte, portrayed by Michel Brown, to lure the drug lord out of hiding.

Also starring in the series, produced by Teleset and Sony Pictures Television, are Alexandra de la Mora ("Los Miserables"), Carmen Madrid ("Señora Acero"), Irene Azuela ("Sense8"), Andrea Martí ("Las Bravo"), Enoc Leaño ("Frida") and Vadhir Derbez ("Eva Luna").

The series is one of several currently popular Spanish-language shows that surround drug trafficking and the struggles of a main criminal protagonist.

Telemundo alone has seen success with "El Señor de los Cielos" and "Señora Acero," which star's Blanca Soto and is currently in its second season.

Soto, Kate del Castillo, in "La Reina del Sur," and now Paleta are popularizing and giving rise to the strong female criminal on Latino television. However, not everyone is fond of this growing theme.

In November, The National Commission of Telecommunications in Venezuela (Conatel) announced that they were banning "La Reina del Sur" before it even premiered.

According to TVNotas, Conatel told Galaxy Entertainment, the Venezuelan arm of DirecTV, to stop airing "La Reina del Sur" because it glamorizes narco-trafficking.

CEO of Conatel William Castillo explained that the themes explored on "La Reina Del Sur" "glorify the life of people involved in narcotraffic and promote values that go against the Venezuelan family."
