Move over Toyota Corolla, the Honda Civic is back and it's better than ever.

And to herald its triumphant return, Honda's beloved compact car was named by the auto industry as the North American Car of The Year.

According to USA Today, the Japanese car makers completely gave the Civic a major overhaul. The car was made longer, wider and lower for a more sporty appearance.

But apart from that, it has the performance to back its racy good looks as it's equipped either with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine or a 1.5-liter turbocharged variant that screams out 174 horsepower.

The new Honda Civic was a major improvement over the previous model, which, according to a report by CNN, completely bombed with critics when it debuted way back in 2011. But now, Honda has bounced back and produced what may be the greatest Civic yet.

It was so great that it completely trumped the competition at the Detroit auto show. As reported by the International Business Times, the Civic even managed to beat the new Mazda MX-5 Miata and the highly acclaimed Chevrolet Malibu.

According to Tony Swan, co-founder of the awards show, "I think the Civic is improved in every possible metric." And the praise reflected on its sales. It was reported that Honda posted a three percent sales increase when it released the new Civic.

Although, the Civic was still outsold by the Toyota Corolla as it managed to sell 363,332 units compared to the Civic's 335,384 units.

But, it not only won the critics' hearts, but that of consumers as well. According to the latest Consumer Reports, the new Honda Civic's ride comfort was improved and was partnered with a more refined body control that keeps the car steady and composed even during sharp turns.

However, apart from the Civic, the Volvo also came out as a big winner at the International Awards. As noted, the XC90 won the North American Truck of the Year.

The XC90 was noted to be the first new vehicle that company produced under its new Chinese ownership, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.

The vehicle is actually a three-row crossover SUV that is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which is both turbocharged and supercharged, In addition, despite the rather low displacement, it can produce 316 horsepower.

This is the second victory for both the 2016 Honda Civic and the Volvo XC90 as Honda got the award back in 2006, while Volvo won in 2003.
