"Clash of Clans" is one of the, if not the, biggest game in the mobile platform. With the upcoming release of the new Supercell game "Clash Royale," is the gaming favorite getting some long overdue competition? Despite the similarity in aesthetic and other features, the two titles have marked differences that will likely appeal to different kinds of players.

As expected, there is a significant contrast in the two Supercell titles, specifically in four facets of the gaming experience: progression, monetization, skill and freshness. The first one highlighted a player's ability to progress easily and quickly within "Clash of Clans." On the other hand, the card-based "Clash Royale" has the limited chest system where players have to wait a few hours to open a chest and consequently advance. In addition, there are only a certain number of slots for the chests allotted for each player.

Monetization is also a big difference between the two. The advantage right now lies with the original "Clash of Clans" as its sister title "Clash Royale" tends to feature heavy monetization that can be surprising considering its status as a new game in the market. In the original game, players can opt not to shell out cash. In the latter, the maxed out level costs $14,000.

The gameplay of the two games also offer differing styles, particularly in showcasing the skill of the players. "Clash Royale" has been shown to do an exceptionally good job at giving the edge to the truly better players, which is fair system and encourages the gamers to play more and improve their skill levels. Meanwhile, "Clash of Clans" does not put as much importance in raw skill of the players as much as it does in getting loots and raiding.

The last factor of the comparison touched on freshness, where "Clash Royale" also gets the edge. Since it's the newer game that is still being honed and enjoyed by new fans, its advantage over the other game is expected. Additionally, as successful as it has been across the market, there haven't been any new and fun features within "Clash of Clans" since the "Clan Wars" was introduced about two years ago.

Supercell will be aiming to keep things fresh in "Clash of Clans" with the update coming in April. The new patch will offer new troops and a renewed focus on Town Hall 10. Meanwhile, "Clash Royale" has already rolled out in certain areas ahead of its previously announced release in Mar. 7.
