Male politicians have long been known to be the philandering type, perhaps because of the amount of power their position provides them. J.F.K. was revered for it, Clinton was chastised for it, and Anthony Weiner was publicly shamed for his dealings with women. Well, now we can add San Diego mayor Bob Filner to that infamous list.

A scandal is now brewing in San Diego as Filner has come forward to publicly address claims that he has sexually harassed multiple women that have worked with him. Former city councilwoman Donna Frye has asked for his immediate resignation after talking with several women, who relayed "very specific" inappropriate acts of Filner's.

"I am embarrassed to admit that I have failed to fully respect the women who work for me and with me, and that at times I have intimidated them," the mayor said. "It's a good thing that behavior that would have been tolerated in the past is being called out in this generation for what it is: inappropriate and wrong."

So far Filner has been avoiding the issue of his resignation. Instead, he has said that he is working with professionals to change his approach towards women in the workplace and seems adamant about keeping his position as mayor. He has also ordered sexual harassment for himself and his staff.

"I am confident that a fair and independent investigation will support my innocence with respect to any charges of sexual harassment," Mayor Filner said.

So far the debate over his job has been based largely on hearsay. Frye has so far not issued any definitive evidence that could point to the extent of Filner's guilt, and no women have publicly come forward to denounce his actions. Still, Frye is asking that he step down so that San Diego does not have to endure a long, drawn out ordeal.

"There will be many opportunities to turn this into a political side show or worse. I am asking our mayor and his closest advisers to please take this to heart," former councilwoman Frye said. "To please hear what we are saying, and to do the right thing."

In officially unrelated, but almost certainly related, news, Filner's fiancee Bronwyn Ingram has called off their engagement earlier this week and it appears that relationship is now in jeopardy of dissipating. Stay classy, San Diego.
