Following the infamous split between Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, the "Come & Get It" hitmaker's worried grandparents Ricardo and Mary Gomez are opening up about their granddaughter's troubled life of fame.

The elderly couple first revealed that the pop star was born to high school sweethearts Ricardo Gomez and Mandy Teefey, who were only 16 and 15 at the time. The grandparents naturally took care of the baby and got to know her the most, as Selena's parents struggled to finish school. "When she was a baby, till about three or four years, we kind of raised her," the grandfather said, Radar Online reported. "Selena's father, he was always working. Her mom, Mandy, too was real hard-working when she was a young lady."

Ricardo Gomez continued to talk about his grandchild's path to stardom, which began from her casting in "Barney," and progressed with her role on Disney's "Wizards of Waverly Place." He realized that things were getting out of control by December 2013, when Selena suddenly cancelled her tour dates and was secretly admitted to rehab in Arizona. "We just saw in some newspaper that she was doing drugs. I called her and said, '[you] need to watch out,'" he said. "She was working a lot. She was exhausted. She hardly takes some time out. There was some pressure, first because it's a lot of work."

The grandfather also blamed Selena Gomez's dysfunctional relationship with on-and-off boyfriend Justin Bieber for her breakdown. "She was worried a lot about Justin. The doctor was telling her she needs to take some time out," he said. "It's just too much pressure what she's going through. It's just too much! She doesn't have a single day's break. It's getting to the point with all this pressure... that it's too much."

Ricardo Gomez added that the "Slow Down" singer will need to take a break from the industry. "I would say so. Everyone was telling her, even her agent and the doctor, 'Selena take some time to yourself," he said. "She was saying she don't want to sing no more, she just wants to be an actress but she's going to combine it, it looks like."

Selena Gomez's grandfather talked about her secret battle with lupus, which she was diagnosed with "a couple of years ago," and finally confirmed that she is in treatment. "She's in treatment. She's getting along pretty good. What worries [us] more is that she doesn't know how to say no. She won't take time for herself to relax, to eat well."
