Mega Millions is a multi-state lottery game played in a total of 44 jurisdictions -- the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and 42 other states. The jackpot prize starts at $12 million and rolls over if no ticket wins the prize. There are nine ways to win the game, which costs only $1 to play.

During the drawing, five numbers are randomly selected from 1 to 56 and another number is selected from 1 to 46. According to Mega Millions' official website, the odds of winning any prize, which can range from $2 to the jackpot prize, are 1 in 40.

The winning numbers from the Aug. 6, 2013 drawing are 1, 11, 16, 51, 55 and Mega ball number 41. Two tickets won a prize by matching all five numbers. The winning tickets come from California and Illinois. The winners will claim the $250,000 prize pre-taxes. Had the tickets matched all five numbers and the Mega ball, the winners could have shared the $20 million jackpot. There was no reported jackpot winner for the Aug. 6 Mega Millions draw.

The biggest recorded Mega Millions jackpot win happened on Mar. 30, 2012 with a whooping $656 million as the prize. That day's drawing yielded three winning tickets -- one from Ottawa, Kan., one bought by Merle and Patricia Butler of Red Bud, Ill. and one belonging to The Three Amigos in Milford Mill, Md. Each of the winning tickets received a $218.6 million cash prize.
