The United States Department of Agriculture recalled nearly 43,000 pounds of ground beef products on Saturday after officials found a possible E. coli contamination. The products were sold at Walmart and other stores nationwide, USA Today reported.

A New Jersey company, Lakeside Refrigerated Services, produced the beef products on June 1. They were sold under brand names Thomas Farm, Marketside Butcher Organic Grass-Fed Ground Beef Patties, and Value Pack Fresh Ground Beef, which are available in retail locations across the country.

According to NBCDFW, officials discovered the contamination after Food Safety and Inspection Service conducted a routine check. A recall notice released by the USDA said the products bear the establishment number "EST. 46841."

Contaminated Beef Products

The federal agency labeled the recall a "Class I," which means consuming the ground beef products could result in serious health consequences or possible death. While there have been no reports of adverse reactions from consuming the products, officials urged customers not to consume them.

While most types of E. coli are harmless, a harmful strain, the O157: H7, can cause acute kidney failure and can be life-threatening. Symptoms include abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloody stool, fever, bleeding, confusion, and seizures. The symptoms often manifest three to four days after exposure, the WebMD said.
