Border construction may have to restart after U.S. President Joe Biden has halted the construction, according to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

This was to plug what Mayorkas called "gaps" in the current barrier.

Mayorkas discussed with Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees last week that despite Biden canceling the border wall construction, it still leaves room to make decisions on finishing some "gaps in the wall," according to a Washington Times report.

Mayorkas said that Customs and Border Protection has submitted plans for what it wants to happen moving forward.

CBP oversees the border wall.

"There are different projects that the chief of the Border Patrol has presented and the acting commissioner of CBP presented to me," Mayorkas was quoted in a report.

Border Wall Gaps

Unfinished sections of the wall have become convenient areas for migrants to enter the United States. Border agents park their vehicles near the gaps to monitor the said access points, according to a Fox News report.

Smugglers were reported to send groups of asylum seekers through the gaps to overwhelm the agents.

One agent eyeing a group of 13 Brazilian migrants arrested said that it is insane, adding that the project is almost done.

"At least, they should be allowed to tie together the primary fence. Otherwise, we're trying to catch these people in the worst possible place. It's just sucking our manpower," the agent was quoted in a report.

Many criticized Biden's move on suspending the construction of the border wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Republican lawmakers are calling U.S. Government Accountability Office to weigh in on the legality of Biden stopping the border wall construction.

The lawmakers argued that it violated federal law and has caused an avoidable and unfortunate scenario at the southern border, according to a Christian Post report.

A letter signed by senators including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also said that Biden's action TO end the border wall construction violated the Impoundment Control Act.

The senators added that the Biden administration's actions and decisions have consequences for the U.S.

Migrants Influx

U.S. authorities are turning back families and adults arriving at the border. However, unaccompanied migrant children are still being allowed to enter the U.S., according to Mayorkas.

Mayorkas urged the migrants not to come to the U.S., saying it is not the time and that the journey is dangerous, according to a DW report.

Mayorkas added that they are building safe and human ways to address the needs of the migrant children.

Around 15,000 migrant children are already in federal custody. The U.S. is expected to see two million undocumented migrants arrive this year.

Biden was set to removing some of the policies implemented by former U.S. President Donald Trump during his presidency.

More than 10,000 children are now in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Meanwhile, CBP is housing 5,000 others.

The number of migrants coming to the U.S. increase before Biden took office in January.
