A Florida cop died after another police officer shot him while they were serving an arrest warrant. The Polk County Sheriff's Office said 21-year-old Deputy Sheriff Blane Lane died in the line of duty on Tuesday during a deputy-involved shooting.

Crime Online reported that Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said four cops were serving a felony warrant in Foxtown to Cheryl Lynn Williams for failure to appear on a meth-related case.

Police reportedly entered the home, and shots were fired after the suspect brandished a BB gun, resembling a handgun. Judd speculated that the suspect planned to commit suicide by cop.

Williams was shot during the confrontation and is now reported to be in stable condition. A witness reportedly identified Williams as the suspect who brandished the BB gun. Williams is expected to be charged with second-degree murder after she is discharged from the hospital.

Florida Cop Serving Arrest Warrant Shot

Sergeant Michael Brooks and deputies Johnny Holsonback III, Adam Pennell, and Blane Lane arrived at the scene at around 3 a.m. According to Tampa Free Press, they advised that shots were fired at 3:08 a.m.

When they arrived at the front door, the first witness at the trailer home told them that Cheryl Lynn Williams was at the backdoor. A second witness, who was also at the back door, told them that Williams was in there.

All of the deputies except Lane went inside. Lane decided to take a tactical position outside the trailer near the front side. His position allowed him to see the view of the door and windows, ensuring that he would see the suspect if she tried to escape.

Williams then stepped into view with a BB gun and immediately pointed it at authorities. Shots were fired, and Williams went down. Lane reported that he had been shot in the arm. He was then transported to a medical center, where he died after the round entered his chest.

Investigation Reveals Florida Cop Shot Dead by Fellow Deputy

According to the early investigation, Michael Brooks and Johnny Holsonback III apparently fired six bullets from their agency-issued firearms. The round that struck Blane Lane reportedly came from one of their firearms.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Grady Judd said Cheryl Lynn Williams "created a violent environment," which led to Lane's death, USA Today reported. Judd noted that Williams wanted to "force the deputies to shoot her." He then added that, unfortunately, Lane was in the line of fire.

Judd described the young Florida cop as "eager" and "brilliant." Judd said Lane had absorbed information "like a sponge" and was careful when doing his job.

The young Florida cop lived in Fort Meade and entered the Polk State College KCTIPS dual law enforcement-detention academy in September 2020. He became a Detention Deputy in May 2021. Lane was sworn in as a patrol deputy last January.

Judd said Williams will likely face additional charges. He noted that the suspect had already served more than nine years in a Florida state prison for drug-related charges. She had also been arrested for previous felonies.
