Another death by selfie has occurred in Brazil. Reports said a 33-year-old Brazilian man lost his balance on a cliff and fell nearly 40 feet to his death.

On the afternoon of November 10, Daily Mail reported that logistics analyst Igor de Oliveira Rodrigues Dias slipped and fell from a rock overlooking Joatinga Beach in Rio de Janeiro.

Local media reported that the Brazilian man was trying to take a selfie when he plummeted from about 40 feet, hitting his skull on another rock below.

His distraught mother, Luiza Rodrigues, 60, told local media that his son had "signed a contract with a company he intended to work for in the morning" and left to enjoy a small celebration on the beach with a friend.

Igor reportedly earned two postgraduate degrees and graduated from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

"He was an only child, he studied, he had a whole life ahead of him," his mother noted.

Igor's father, Jonas Dias, said: "He died before me, and I don't accept that. I think that every son has to bury his father, and not the father bury his son. It was a tragedy."

Death by Selfie in Brazil: Brazilian Man Plunges to His Death

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene, but before airlifting Igor de Oliveira Rodrigues Dias' body out of the area via helicopter, they proclaimed him dead.

After the terrible accident, New York Post reported that authorities released a PSA cautioning the public against taking high-altitude selfie photos to get attention on social media.

"We always have to be safe: Never get close to the edge of the rocks. Ask someone to take a picture, if necessary... Always seek safety first. Don't risk your life for likes," said Rio de Janeiro Fire Department spokesman Fabio Contreiras.

A 2021 study by Spain's Miguel Hernández University of Elche showed that death by selfie accounted for 379 deaths worldwide in the past 13 years.

India reportedly had the most selfie deaths with 100, followed by the United States with 39 while Brazil was in fifth place. Another study in 2020 found that "selficides" or selfies that have gone awry accounted for more deaths than shark attacks.

Another Man in Brazil Falls to His Death Following a Zipline Crash

A visitor in Brazil was on a zipline excursion when a post supporting the wire collapsed, and the camera showed him falling to his death.

According to the New York Post, Sergio Murilo Lima de Santana, the victim, and his partner, who was on the ground, caught on camera the terrifying incident from various angles.

The incident happened on October 10, while De Santana, 39, was gliding down the ride at the Canoa Quebrada resort in Aracati.

The zipline's support structure suddenly fell, sending him plummeting into the sand below with a thud. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but he was declared dead upon arrival.

According to Spanish research published last year, an accident involving a photographer occurred every 13 days between January 2008 and July 2021. Brazil had the fifth-highest number of deaths from these incidents.
