As the hype for the PS4 continues to grow, the Xbox One seems to be missing opportunities.

The Playstation 4 jumped out to an early lead this week when Sony officially announced that the game console would be released Nov. 15; Xbox One, on the other hand, only released a list of some games. Microsoft still has yet to announce arguably the most desired piece of information about its new console: the release date.

The second edge that the Playstation 4 has thus far is the price advantage. The $399 listed price is by far the better deal than the $499 Xbox One, which is a comparable system yet has a price tag that sits significantly higher. The Playstation 4 is already so popular that Sony is trying to keep pre-order sales at bay. Some believe the company may soon be running short on consoles due to demand, but a Sony executive was quoted as saying that the issue is "a good problem to have" since it obviously means sales are up.

Could the Playstation 4 take the early momentum and run with it? It appears Sony is trying hard to pull away and jump in front as a clear-cut winner as executives have been publicly downplaying any advantages of the Xbox One that might hinder the progress of the Playstation 4.

Following the announcement of the PS4's release date Sony President and Group Chief Andrew House praised his company's reliability while taking indirect, yet obvious shots at rival Microsoft.

"While others have shifted their message and changed their story, we were consistent in maintaining a message that is fair and in tune with consumer desires," House said.

In order for the Xbox One to regain its footing in the competition, Microsoft will need to pour money into marketing campaigns promoting distinctive specifications. They will have to justify why their system should cost $100 more, which could easily come back to bite them in the long run.

Lastly, and most importantly, Microsoft really needs to figure out an official launch date within the next week if it wants to catch up. The momentum gained by Sony needs to be counteracted by each of the aforementioned factors or else it will be an uphill battle for the Xbox One.
