The app known for being the free streaming alternative to Netflix, Popcorn Time has added support for Chromecast, allowing owners of the digital media player to use the app on their HDTVs.

Although the development of Popcorn Time was terminated by its original team in March, another group that calls themselves Time4Popcorn adopted a part of the original software to continue developing the Popcorn Time app. Its latest version, Alpha 4.3, also allows support for Chromecast on Windows computers.

Popcorn Time became popular earlier this year for providing free videos through the innovative use of torrents and packaging the experience in a familiar and user-friendly interface that is similar to that of Netflix. The app was praised for its ease of use and for its ability to avoid potential issues with piracy by not locally hosting any data. However, the creators still faced legal threats despite their claim of legitimacy and unfortunately had to abandon the project.

Meanwhile, Time4Popcorn decided to pick up from where the original team left off and dedicated themselves to continue the development of the Popcorn time app last May. Since then, the European group has added newer features including a built-in VPN for anonymous viewing, a new app for Android, an upcoming version for Mac users and Chromecast integration. This time, the development team decided to operate incognito to avoid the fate that the original development team encountered.

Currently, Popcorn Time is in its alpha stage for the Windows version, and the app is on its way to Android and Mac. However, the Popcorn Time without Chromecast support is already available for at least Mac OS X 10.7, Windows XP, as well as 32/64 bit for Linux. It can be downloaded directly from their website and the latest updates are posted on the official blog where users can give their input to the development team.
