When Apple releases a beta of its latest version of the iOS operating system, it typically supplies it to developers so they can get a feel for the system. That was not so with the release of iOS 8 beta 6, according to Apple Insider.

The California-based tech giant released the newest beta version only to iPhone carriers for testing.

Developers were skipped this round because Apple said it is so close to releasing the golden master version if iOS 8. The "GM" version is jargon for the operating system that typically is the final iteration before it goes public.

Cellular carriers all must accept accept iOS 8 beta 6 by Sept. 5, BGR reported. That date makes sense because Apple has hinted at a Sept. 9 event where the company is expected to uncover the iPhone 6.

Beta 6 also reportedly fixes issues with a number of iOS 8 functions, like iCloud and Maps using excessive amounts of data. The report said that the latest beta corrects problems with the new Continuity function between iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, mainly affecting mail transfer between the two platforms.

Based on Apple history, the golden master version of iOS 8 will be supplied to developers at the same time the iPhone 6 is unveiled on Sept. 9. Rumors have suggested that the iPhone 6 is possibly scheduled to be released for sale on Sept. 19.

Typically Apple will make public its latest iOS software two days before new iPhones go on sale, which this year would be Sept. 17.
