The successful introduction superhero teams like Marvel's "The Avengers" and most recently the "Guardians of the Galaxy" has paved the way for a smaller more Earth-bound superhero team: Marvel's "The Defenders." Marvel and Netflix are teaming up to bring product bringing the heroes of "The Defenders" to the small screen.

"The Defenders" superhero team includes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Each superhero has been greenlit for a 13-episode season.

Here is what we know about the upcoming Marvel/Netflix collaboration.

It has been reported that "Daredevil" has already been cast with Charlie Cox in the title role of Matt Murdock. Also Vincent D'Onofrio ("Law and Order: Criminal Intent," "Men In Black") has also been cast as the nemesis Kingpin. Rosario Dawson is also expected to appear in the first episode.

Production is already underway. "Daredevil" is not expected to debut on Netflix until 2015. The remaining "Defenders" (Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage) and their expected TV series are also expected to be introduced over a one-year period, MoviePilot reported.

Compared to The Avengers, The Defenders are a smaller scale, yet less family-oriented team. Netflix's Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said they are not afraid to go a little darker.

"What we love about this particular set of heroes is that they're a little more down to Earth. Costume wise and also in that these are gritty crime stories, more in the streets than in the clouds," Sarandos said, MoviePilot reported.

Both Marvel and Netflix are busy with their TV content. Marvel at the moment is working on a number of live-action TV projects within the superhero realm, such as, ABC's "Agent Carter" and "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," the LA Times reported.

The four characters' seasons will eventually culminate into one big show with "The Defenders," LA Times reported. If "The Defenders" is successful, then it can be brought to the big screen.

While "Daredevil" is going into production, that leaves the rest of the team and their roles up for grabs. At the moment, however, Jessica Jones is the next superhero of "The Defenders" scheduled to go into production, Empire reported.

"Right now, the writers' rooms are open and they're looking at casting Jessica," Sarandos said. "Eventually the series will run very close together. You can then have a separate season where the characters will cross over."

It is a long way off before "The Defenders" makes its way to Netflix, but it has been speculated that "The Defenders" might meet "The Avengers."
