Mexican authorities have announced the capture of the leader of the Zetas drug cartel.

The move helps further destabilize one of Mexico's most brutal drug cartels as the government seeks to reestablish order in various areas of the nation.

Alejandro "Omar" Trevino Morales, known as "Z-42," was captured early on Wednesday, according to NBC News, in the state of Nuevo Leon.

CNN Mexico reports Morales was captured in the wealthy town of San Pedro Garza Garcia in the early hours of the morning. The brother of drug lord Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, Omar took over as leader when Mexican authorities arrested his brother in 2013. Authorities have charged him with conducting organized crime and carrying military-grade weapons.

The Mexican federal officials had offered a reward of 30 million pesos for information that led to Morales' capture. The DEA, also seeking Morales, offered $5 million.

With the capture of Morales, the Zetas Cartel has lost another leader and all of the Morales brothers who are considered the group's founders. According to the Telegraph, Jose Trevino Morales was captured in New Mexico on 2012.

"Omar is as ruthless and violent as his brother," said Mike Vigil, a former DEA operative, at the time of Miguel's capture. "I don't think he's as intelligent. But he's capable enough to control the Zetas. He learned from Miguel."

The Telegraph asserts that without any more senior leaders a power vacuum could cause infighting between junior leaders and also expose the cartel to danger from rival groups, including Sinaloa Cartel and the CGNJ, known as the "Mata Zetas" or Zeta Killers.

According to CNN Mexico, the Zetas cartel started in the 1990s as a group of deserting army soldiers and was part of the Gulf Cartel. However, the two split in 2010 and the Zetas delved into drug smuggling, later branching off into kidnapping, extortion and assassinations.

Morales' arrest also comes a couple weeks after police arrested Humberto Domínguez Lara, the Zetas' comptroller. He oversaw payments to the cartel and managed the cartel's financial resources.
