Designer Narciso Rodriguez has noticed a trend in fashion sense these days.

"Everyone was dressed up. The younger people, especially, were wearing beautiful clothes," Rodriguez said of a recent event to the Wall Street Journal. "It used to be that fashion kids were too cool to dress up."

It seems that the trend this year is to be a bit more classy than the cavalier "throw sophistication to the wind" trend of the 90s and early 200s.

For his Spring and Summer 2014 collection, Rodriguez goes for classy, but not overly "busy" looks.

"I love the idea of purity but not so much simplicity," Rodriguez told the Fiber2Fashion blog. "Things can look clean and simple, but there needs to be a great deal of thought behind it before it can be precise."

For Rodriguez, the quality of the fashion experience begins with the quality of its root materials, the fabric itself.

"I'm such a stickler for the quality of the fabric and where the fabric comes from," Rodriguez said to Fiber2Fashion. "I can tell the difference between weavers and what type of yarns they're using because for me it starts there."

The much-touted designer likes elegance, but also has a desire to "keep it real" when designing clothes to be worn in the real world.

"I love geometry , abstraction , architecture, but always with an eye to reality, practicality, and how useful and imperishable," Rodriguez said in a recent Spanish interview with Mujer Hoy. "I want to make an impact in the style of a woman and her wardrobe for more than a season. That is my goal."

"I'm not a fan of the 'simple' word. A T-shirt is simple. Create something pure that could be perceived as 'simple' requires a lot of energy, time and creativity. I like the concepts of 'sculptural' and 'elegant.'"
