In what is definitely a first -- and unique -- in shipping trends, online retailer Amazon.com has announced its new "Amazon Prime Air" shipping option, which will ship your purchases from the store in 30 minutes or less...via drone.

According to Forbes.com, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced the project on yesterday's episode of "60 Minutes," and will be used for orders that weigh five pounds or less. Drones, which are perhaps best known for their uses in the military, also have non-military uses, and Seattle (the home city of Amazon.com's headquarters) already has drones flying orders out to local customers.

"Putting Prime Air into commercial use will take some number of years as we advance the technology and wait for the necessary FAA rules and regulations," the company said. Amazon added that it hoped the agency would put in place rules for unmanned aerial vehicles by 2015. "We will be ready at that time," it said.

And this, according to The Los Angeles Times, won't be introduced to the public at large until 2015. The company also said that it's been working on this delivery method for a number of years, and it's still in its experimental stages. Amazon already has expanded its grocery offerings and has also teamed up with the United States Postal Service to deliver packages on Sundays...all offerings that give them a competitive edge amongst other online retailers in the industry.
