In the last episode of "Fresh Off the Boat,", "Phillip Goldstein," Eddie Huang met newcomer Phillip Goldstein, a new Chinese/Jewish kid at his school. Everyone thought Eddie and Phillip would be friends based on their Asian heritage, but the two boys quickly realized they had nothing in common.

Jessica adored Phillip; he played cello and studied hard. He is the perfect Chinese son of Jewish parents. She desperately wanted Eddie and Phillip to be friends. Hip hop fan Eddie dreaded the task, until he came up with a plan to attend a Beastie Boys concert by telling his mother that it was Phillip who wanted to go. The scheme worked.

Goldstein and Eddie made a deal to attend the concert together, but Phillip stood Eddie up. Jessica scolded Phillip for his selfishness and poor manners. She could not bear to see Eddie disappointed, so she went to the concert with him.

The next day at school, Eddie wore his Beastie Boys concert T-shirt. He saw that Walter, the only black kid at school, also wore the concert tee. While the two did not find friendship when they first met during the pilot episode, they bonded over their mutual admiration for the Beastie Boys. Could it be the start of a new friendship?

Eddie has managed to make progress with his crush and babysitter, Nicole, by sharing his music with her. It turns out the two share a similar taste in hip hop, and this has allowed Eddie to get closer to Nicole for the first time since she moved to town. He wants desperately to be Nicole's boyfriend, but he doesn't know what to do to move the relationship in that direction. Eddie has no experience in the realm of love and courtship, so he asks the one person he knows can help: his father.

On the next episode, "License to Sell," Louis gives Eddie advice about how to win over Nicole. Eddie learns that ubiquity is a key to romance. Louis recommends that Eddie show up wherever Nicole is so that he is fresh in her mind. Instead of finding another common interest to share with Nicole or participating in activities she likes to accomplish that, he puts his own spin on the advice. Will he succeed in winning Nicole or turn her off for good?

Meanwhile, Jessica backs out of taking her real estate license exam because she worries that she cannot compete against Orlando's top Realtor.
