“The Following” had a huge fanbase when it first started on television. Despite Fox’s promise of an exciting finale episode for the show, multiple online news sources are convinced that Joe Carroll’s death might have something to do with why the network decided to cancel the TV thriller.

The two-hour series finale was shown on Monday night. As seen in the episode, Max was clearly losing her mind while her on-and-off boyfriend, Mike Weston, was bleeding all over the emergency room. When Ryan shows up, all he can do is attempt to comfort his niece who is freaking out, as reported by TV Line.

This two-hour episode titled “Dead or Alive” and “The Reckoning” will be FOX’s last installment to the Kevin Bacon series that went on for three seasons, having premiered in 2013.

With its subtitle, the remaining fans of the show have started to wonder if Mike will even make it, or will the show runners decide to kill him off and add him to the body pile that Joe has previously started to have a more dramatically-chilling ending to the three-season thriller drama.

EOnline has stated that despite a lot of stab wounds, Mike did make it out of "The Following" alive, much to the fans' surprise. As Ryan left the hospital, Mike was already on his way to a full recovery.

The FBI continue to hunt for Theo and the stakes have become even higher, especially as some of their own have become under attack and what were once strong alliances became shaky and untrustworthy.

Bacon, who portrays the character of Ryan Hardy, had to make a huge sacrifice in the final episode. This was not expected of him, considering that he has somewhat acquired a bit of an evildoer streak during season 3. Still, despite the surprises that the show had to offer, they were reportedly not enough to get “The Following” renewed.

Reports also indicated that the death of Joe Carroll, played by James Purefoy, was a huge game changer that compelled the network to cancel the show. According to the report, FOX still renewed the show for a third season despite its declining viewership. However, a lot of the show’s original writers and producers have reportedly left their posts.
