Last week's "Wayward Pines" Episode 3 "Our Town, Our Rules" ended with quite a cliffhanger.

Ben Burke had followed his father, Ethan Burke, out of the house and into the woods. He saw his dad talking with ex-lover and former Secret Service agent Kate Hewson. He returned home and told his mother, Theresa Burke.

Theresa, heartbroken, left her wedding ring on a table. She and Ben attempted to leave town on foot with suitcases in tow, but they were chased down by Sheriff Arnold Pope driving his vehicle. He corned them by the large wall surrounding the town. Once out of the vehicle, he punched Ben in the face after the boy refused to do as he was told.

Ethan arrived home to find his wife's wedding ring. He realized his wife and son were probably trying to leave, so he ventured into town to find them. He discovered Sheriff Pope standing over Theresa near the wall surrounding Wayward Pines. He attacked the sheriff only to end up on the ground in the scuffle. The sheriff pointed his gun at Ethan when Ben saved his father by running over Pope with the car.

Ethan scrambled to his feet, picked up Pope's gun and pulled the trigger. Pope's last bone-chilling words were, "The truth is worse than anything you could ever imagine."

In the episode's shocking last seconds, a door on the surrounding electrified wall opened. A creature crawled out and hauled Pope's body away. Bizarre sounds of howling and screeching could be heard coming from the wall's other side.

What kind of creature scooped up Sheriff Pope's body? Is Pope really dead, or will the mysterious creature help him regain life?

In "Wayward Pines" Episode 4, "One of Our Senior Realtors Has Chosen to Retire," the Burke family returns to town. Ethan is appointed the town's new sheriff. The residents seem happy, if not relieved, that he is now in a position of authority.

Ben attend his first day of school, but it is not what he expects. He is given private tutoring.

The townspeople ask Ethan to perform a "reckoning" for a citizen named Peter who spray painted a building. Will Ethan follow the Wayward Pine rules and perform the reckoning, or break the rules?
