“Guardians of the Galaxy” writer and director James Gunn already gave Marvel a 70-page story treatment for the sequel in April, and he updated fans with tidbits of information about the film through the Periscope social media broadcasting app.

It appears Gunn has so much creative freedom that the next installment will deviate from the source material.

“It is different than what is in the comic books,” Gunn revealed on “Alison Rosen is Your New Best Friend” in February.

“When the movie came out, we got green-lit on the sequel right away. I went in and I sat down with those guys, and I am, like, ‘Okay. Here is what I think the sequel should be’ and they were like, 'Oh. Whoa. That's risky. But, okay. And I said, now I'm gonna turn over the story in a few short weeks and we'll find out how well it works," he added.

Gunn also dropped a few hints on what fans can expect from the film, including possible characters.

"It is not really based on anything. The story for ‘Guardians 2’ is an original story that I came up with that I started working on, actually, while I was shooting ‘Guardians 1 and it will answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill's father and who he is and what's going on with that. We'll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we're gonna meet some of the new characters that will be very important for Guardian movies and probably important to the Marvel universe as a whole.”

Despite Gunn’s “risky” take on the sequel, Marvel trusts Gunn’s vision for “Guardians of the Galaxy 2.”

On Tuesday, Gunn confirmed via social media that he has already completed the first draft of the next “Guardians of the Galaxy” screenplay. The movie's official title or plot details were not revealed. According to multiple online reports, Gunn finished it in just 48 days.

It must be really special, with lead star Chris Pratt admitting that it got him teary-eyed.

"I will say that James Gunn's pitch and his idea legitimately put tears in my eyes," Pratt told Digital Spy. "It is so good. I cannot wait to get started on it. I cannot wait for people to see what he is going to pull off with the second movie. It is so, so big and so good."

Pratt was also glad that he was permitted by the film makers to have his own song choices for "Awesome Mix Vol. 2."

But is there a chance that Guardians will have a crossover project with the Avengers? After all, they do share the same villain at some point – Thanos.

“That is speculation,” Pratt told IGN. “I have not heard that. No. no one has ever discussed it with me.”

The next "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie will start shooting in February next year and will have a May 2017 premiere. That said, its film makers have a lot of time to revise Gunn’s draft for the sequel. Writers are known for constantly tweaking the story and its scenes, even during production. This is oftentimes done to ensure that certain scenes fit perfectly with the film sequence.
