If there is one thing that you can always count on in the Star Wars universe, it is that someone will lose a hand, arm or some part of his or her body (mostly his to this point).

Luke lost his hand at the end of "Empire Strikes Back." Anakin Skywalker lost his hand in "Episode II: Attack of the Clones" before losing limbs and arms in the ensuing chapter. In the final Episode of the saga, "Return of the Jedi," Darth Vader also saw his hand sliced off. Even C-3PO got in on the act, getting completely discombobulated in "Empire Strikes Back" before eventually getting put back together.

So it should not come as a surprise to anyone to see the iconic Golden droid sporting a new arm on the box of the film's merchandise. In the image C-3PO now has a red arm, which is rather bizarre and shocking to see on him, yet not new for fans of the films.

In his earliest versions ("The Phantom Menace") he was unfinished and in the ensuing film he had a metal casing. The Golden version that has become so iconic was first seen in "Episode III: Revenge of the Sith."

The image also shows R2-D2 and BB8. R2-D2 does not exhibit any new features or visual alterations, but that does not mean that the famous droid does not have any new tricks up his sleeve in the upcoming film.

The question of the day regarding C-3PO's new limb is how he lost his arm and why it was not reinstalled on him as it was in "Empire Strikes Back." It is likely that this event occurred during the 30-year period between "Return of the Jedi" and "The Force Awakens," so anyone expecting to see C-3PO lose his arm in the film will be disappointed.

There should be more spoilers on the film's characters as more promotional material and merchandise comes to light.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.
