For over a decade, #16 led the San Francisco 49er's with a steely resolve and unflappable arm. Joe Montana led the 49ers to four Super Bowl championships, ensuring that the 49ers of the 1980's would go down as one of the greatest football dynasties of all time. Now, his son is aiming to do the same.

Nate Montana will work out at the San Francisco 49er's pro day today in hopes of impressing enough to land a spot on the roster either through the upcoming NFL Draft or through free agency. The pro day is open to local talent in the Bay Area, and since Montana went to De La Salle High School in Concord, he is eligible.

The 6'4", 215 pound 23-year-old Montana hopped all over the map during his college career. First he played locally at Pasadena City College, was a backup at Notre Dame, then went out to Montana for a year before playing his senior year at Division II West Virginia Wesleyan.

Barring an incredible workout with the 49ers, it is not widely believed that Montana will be drafted during this April's NFL Draft. The main reason his workout is generating so much buzz is because of his last name and the off-chance another Montana could lead the 49ers to greatness.

"It's going to be hard for him to transition to the next level," NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks said. "His passes don't have zip. He has difficulty making pro throws. He's a great kid, his measurables are fine, but in terms of playing at the next level, his performance here was not very good."

During his senior year at West Virginia Wesleyan Montana totaled a respectable 2,480 yards and 19 touchdowns while starting in nine games, though he did so in a pass-heavy offense. Many scouts think that his younger brother Nic is actually the better pro prospect of the two. Nick Montana will be a junior quarterback at the University of Tulane this upcoming year.
