Microsoft has finally released the highly anticipated Windows 10 for personal computers on Wednesday, with the mobile version slated to follow at a later date.

The Redmond-based company has also announced that the new operating system will hit smartphones next in select Windows Lumia devices.

"The following Lumia smartphones will receive a free upgrade when available: Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830 and Lumia 930," Microsoft said in a statement posted on the company's official website.

The units listed on the page are not the complete line up of Lumia devices out in the market. A few high-end and lower-end models were not included and it is unclear whether they have been left out completely or will receive the update later.

But according to Neowin, the tech company has assured that all devices on Lumia Denim will have the Windows 10 mobile version. However, not all features will be included.

The website contacted Microsoft to ask for clarifications on the lineup that came out and they confirmed that other units will also receive the update.

"This is an initial list of in-market devices to receive the Windows 10 update. It is our ambition to bring Windows 10 to all Lumia devices running Lumia Denim software, noting that some features will vary based on the hardware specifications," said a spokesperson from the tech company.

Microsoft has promised in 2014 that it aims to bring the update to all Windows 8 devices and it seems that it will just be a matter of time before it does. However, those who have the Lumia Denim hardware must keep in mind that the OS for the mobile version has certain limitations and not all units will get the exact same features.

Techno Buffalo reported that one example of this is the biometric security feature in Windows Hello.

Microsoft has yet to announce when the update for Windows 10 Mobile will be available for download.
