A student at a high school in Ohio shot himself early this morning in his classroom in an apparent suicide attempt, according to reports.

The young man is a student at LaSalle high School, an all-male parochial school in Cincinatti. The incident took place at approximately 9:00 on Monday morning. Authorities have not yet released the student's name but say he was taken to nearby University of Cincinatti Medical Center for medical attention.

According to Green Township Police Chief Bart West, the entire school was put on lockdown after the incident. The lockdown has since been lifted.

"All the other students in the building are okay," West told reporters during a news conference.

West commented that the student had apparently been trying to kill himself and that he had no other information on what the gunshot had been fired.

A spokesperson for the school has said that authorities are speaking to other students in a bid to learn more about the young man. Additionally, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese has sent a number of counselors to LaSalle to speak with other students that may be in crisis over this morning's events. The school has arranged an early dismissal from today's classes.

Speaking about the student who shot himself, LaSalle director of community development Greg Tankersley said "we just ask that you pray for him and his family. It's a tragic situation for this young man."
