An infant baby was found abandoned on the beach in Hawaii on Sunday, shortly after it had been delivered by its unidentified mother.

The child, a baby girl, was 'abandoned immediately after birth," according to the Director of the State Department of Human Services Patricia McManaman. She was born full-term, weighing in at approximately eight pounds.

A woman who was parked at Sandy Beach in Honolulu on Sunday night reported hearing people screaming late that night between 11pm and 12am. The screaming stopped after a short time and then the woman heard the sound of a baby crying. She walked to the beach toward the sound of the crying and it was then that she saw a baby alone on the sand, naked, but apparently in good health. The good Samaritan took the baby in her car at dropped her off at nearby Queen's Medical Center

According to reports, the child is still in good health at the hospital and has been drinking formula. She is now in official state custody.

"We're just very grateful this child is alive and doing well," a hospital spokesperson told reporters.

Police, who are investigating the case as endangering the welfare of a minor and child abandonment, have not yet announced any suspects.

The Honolulu Police Department says it will work with Child Protective Services in a bid to identify the child.

The State Department of Human Services says it intends to file a claim in family court asking for custody of the child this week if her parents do not come forward to claim her.
