Television's favorite offbeat doctor Mindy Kaling is set to welcome a new, unexpected chapter in her life for the show's fourth season - and it's not just her impending motherhood. "The Mindy Project" will debut on online streaming portal Hulu on September 15, securing its latest 26-episode season on its new home on the web.

Fans of the cult comedy have reason to rejoice with news of the premiere date, after Fox axed the critically acclaimed show due to its low ratings on air. Unlike other streaming platforms, Hulu has decided to keep the weekly release format of "The Mindy Project" and its growing selection of comedy and drama series.

According to Variety, Hulu's senior VP and head of content Craig Erwich explained the reason behind veering away from the industry practice of making entire seasons available online all at once. "We value the shared experience and the joy of the water cooler that is television," he said during the Television Critics Assn. press tour. He believes the weekly schedule allows the viewers to discover Hulu shows more easily.

Producers of the popular series were on the same page, and they embraced the opportunities their partnership with Hulu presented. In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Mark Warburton and fellow producers David Stassen and Charlie Grandy spoke of the advantages of their new home including the longer season, longer running time and more creative freedom.

Also on hand during the press tour was the "The Mindy Project" team who are all looking forward to their new home. The show's heroine and producer Mindy Kaling was in complete agreement with Erwich and Hulu.

For Kaling, getting picked up by Hulu for a new season was a chance to continue a project that had more stories to tell.

"I felt, personally, I wasn't ready to say goodbye to the show," she told the crowd at the press junket. "And I'm so grateful to Hulu for giving us this opportunity. I just want to make the show better than it's ever been. It went from being, 'oh, we're never going to do the show again' to 'we're going to have more work than we've ever had.'"

"The Mindy Project" premieres on Hulu on September 15. Watch out for prominent guest stars such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Freida Pinto, Garrett Dillahunt, Kunal Nayar and more.
