The last time Square Enix and Disney released a main entry to the "Kingdom Hearts" series was in 2005 with "Kingdom Hearts 2". To put in perspective how long that was, Sony's PS2 was still in season back then.

Bearing in mind that it's been 10 years since the franchise's last full title, current generation console gamers might not be too well-versed about the "Kingdom Hearts" franchise. This unfamiliarity could inflict a marketing disaster to the upcoming "Kingdom Hearts 3."

Square Enix and Disney are well aware of that fact and are currently doing something about it. If an employee resume from an earlier Latin Post report is any indication, the gaming studios are hard at working on "Kingdom Hearts 2.9."

Before anything can be added on the "Kingdom Hearts 2.9" rumor, another "Kingdom Hearts" HD remastered compilation has been made official.

Square Enix in cooperation with Disney recently announced "Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue" for the PS4 at Sony's Tokyo Game Show media event.

According to Polygon, the game will feature an HD remake of "Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance," "Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover," and "Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage."

In hindsight, the most recent "Kingdom Hearts" remake was the PS3-exclusive "Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix" back in December 2014.  The game featured an HD remastered "Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix" and "Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix."

Back to the upcoming HD remakes, Square Enix said "A Fragmentary Passage" is a "completely new playable episode" from the perspective of Aqua that will directly tie into the story of "Kingdom Hearts 3."

Meanwhile "Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover" will unravel "the mysterious story of the Foretellers, connecting the earliest parts of the series' history." The title will link to the upcoming mobile game "Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ".

Game Rant restated that "Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue" isn't a new game per se but will nevertheless lead to "Kingdom Hearts 3."

Square Enix's also recently announced that "Kingdom Hearts 3" will include San Fransokyo, the world from "Big Hero 6." As far as the character cross-over franchise is concern, there's no telling who or what might show up next.

"Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue" will arrive on PS4 in 2016 while the hotly anticipated "Kingdom Hearts 3" will follow shortly, although Square Enix is yet to announce an actual release date for the full title.
