The "Assassin's Creed" movie has officially begun shooting in Malta according to numerous reports.

According to Comicbook.com, the Malta Film Commission officially announced that the new movie had begun its production and there are even a number of photographs circulating online that bear this out.

The new movie, which stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, is based on the popular video game franchise by Ubisoft. The film's plot apparently follows Callum Lynch (Fassbender) as he experiences the adventures of his ancestor in 15th Century Spain. Through these experiences, Callum learns that he is the heir to a secret society known as the Assassins. With his new knowledge and skills, he sets out to take down the powerful Templars in the present day.

The plot follows closely to the story in the video games which followed Desmond Miles, a descendant of the Assassins. Using the Animus device, he also experienced the memories of his ancestors in unlock the key to saving the world. Desmond sacrifices himself at the end of the third game, but his memories survive in cyberspace and are allowed to be accessed by other descendants of the Assassins.

Fans looking forward to the hotly anticipated movie got to see a new image of Fassbender in full Assassins' garb, thus pumping up the hype for the new film.

It also helps that the movie has director Justin Kurzel, who recently worked with Fassbender and Cotillard in the recent adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth." That film has received raves for its stylish visuals and its reinterpretation of the text.

There are high hopes tied to this film, especially since there has yet to be a truly successful video game-to-movie adaptation in recent memory. Most of those adaptations have been panned for their thin writing and emphasis on action.

"Assassin's Creed" hits theaters Dec. 21, 2016.
