Soccer is the most popular sport in Mexico, and they have a long tradition of competing in many big events. Mexico is the most successful Gold Cup nation of all-time having won the prestigious tournament a record seven times including this year. Mexico has also competed in 15 FIFA World Cups dating back to 1930.

With so much success and history, Mexico has had a lot of great players over the decades. Their most prolific goal scorer at the moment is Javier Hernandez. "Chicharito" found the net against the United States in the CONCACAF final in their 3-2 win to secure a spot in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. With that goal, Hernandez now has 42 career goals for the Mexican National Team.

Hernandez has always been more successful for Mexico as opposed to the club teams he has played for. With that 42nd career international goal, Hernandez is now just five goals away from breaking Jared Borgetti's country record of 46. One of Borgetti's best performances for Mexico came at the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Luis Hernandez has 35 career goals for Mexico. Although that's 11 away from the all-time record, he did score some of the biggest goals in Mexico team history. Hernandez holds the record for most FIFA World Cup goals scored by a Mexican player with four. Hernandez, Rafael Marquez and Cuauhtémoc Blanco all have three FIFA World Cup goals.

However, none of them were able to dominate the Spanish Premier League and put their names in the record books in Spain. That distinction belongs to one Hugo Sanchez. Sanchez is one of the greatest La Liga players of all-time with 234 goals in Spain primarily with Real Madrid. Only Lionel Messi and Telmo Zarra have more career La Liga goals. Unfortunately for Sanchez, he only scored one World Cup goal, which came in 1986 when Mexico was the host nation.

Hernandez certainly has time on his side. He is only 27 years old, and he shows no sign of slowing down. Hernandez has appeared in 76 international games for Mexico already while Borgetti played in just 89 career matches. Hernandez is pretty much a guaranteed lock to surpass Borgetti -- it's just a matter of when. Claudio Suárez is Mexico's all-time most capped player.

Hernandez is the only active player ranked in the top 10 of Mexico's all time scoring list. Andres Guardado, who had an incredible Gold Cup this summer, has 21 career goals for Mexico.
