Rumor has it that Xiaomi's upcoming flagship smartphone will feature the company's custom-made fingerprint recognition technology.

An insider confirmed on his Weibo page via WCCF Tech that the Xiaomi Mi5 will not implore the aid of Qualcomm's Sense ID Ultrasound sensor, despite one of the handset's rumored chipset having the capability to support the said feature.

The latest development has hinted that Xiaomi will be fitting their own version of the technology onto the Mi5. However, that's all the information reported as of this time.

Just a month ago, Tech Zoom shared a leaked ad for the Mi5. The promotional ad didn't reveal much except that the handset will feature a fingerprint sensor.

As coy as the disclosure seemed, it indicated Xiaomi was ready to take the next step in its mobile manufacturing business.  Nonetheless, questions regarding how the company plans to do so remained unanswered.

It was earlier reported the Chinese manufacturer was undecided between the Snapdragon 820 SoC and Mediatek's ten-core Helio X20. The former supports Qualcomm's Ultrasound technology while the latter was the faster processor.

According to GSM Arena, a Mi5 fitted with the Helio X20 scored 73,075 on the AnTuTu benchmark. The score easily surpassed the Exynos 7420-powered Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge. Both high-end Samsung devices tallied scores slightly above the 70,000 mark.

Phone Radar stated a week ago the Mi5 will launch with the Helio X20 on chip since the Snapdragon 820 couldn't be mass produced on time. This could explain why Xiaomi is apparently going with their own fingerprint recognition technology. Although, the SD 820 version of the handset will be available in early 2016 after Qualcomm finishes mass production of the said chip.

Xiaomi also announced last week that it will hold a press event on Oct. 19. The company even posted a poster of the event on its Weibo page that read: "The next generation of new conference." Xiaomi did not specify which products will it showcase during the event, although many hoped the Mi5 will be one of them.

In the meantime, Xiaomi Today listed the Mi5's specs to include:

  • 5.3-inch Quad HD (1440x2560) display with 554ppi pixel density
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 16GB or 64GB storage space models with no support for external memory expansion
  • 16-megapixel back camera with dual-LED flash and eight-megapixel front-facing unit
  • 3,030 mAh battery
  • USB Type-C port

Xiaomi's upcoming flagship smartphone will sell in China for ¥1,999 or roughly $316. It will run on the company's new Android-based MIUI 7 OS.
