The Kansas City Royals have finally won their first World Series since 1985. The Royals defeated the New York Mets in 12 innings, 7-2. They forced extra innings at the top of the ninth inning and scored five runs in the 12th to win their second World Series trophy in franchise history.

Matt Harvey led the Mets with a pitching gem, throwing eight innings with five hits, allowing two earned runs and two walks while striking nine. Royals' starter Edinson Volquez pitched six innings, giving up only two hits, two runs, one unearned with five walks and five strikeouts, per ESPN.

In the live score by The Guardian, Harvey was pitching a 2-0 shutout when he allowed a leadoff walk to Lorenzo Cain to start the ninth inning. He easily stole second base before Eric Hosmer hit a double off Harvey to cut the lead to one.

Closer Jeurys Familia was then summoned by manager Terry Collins to save the game for the Mets. He allowed a grounder to Moustakas for the first out, moving Hosmer to third base. Salvador Perez grounds out to third, but Lucas Duda threw a wild pitch at home plate to give the Royals the tying run.

The Royals bullpen trio of Kelvin Herrera, Luke Hochevar and Wade Davis pitched six innings of relief, allowing only two hits while walking only one batter and striking out six. The five run 12th inning for Kansas City started with a single from Salvador Perez.

He was replaced by pitch runner Jarrod Dyson, who easily stole second base. Alex Gordon hit a groundball for the first out, but Dyson moved into third with Christian Colon batting next. He hit a 1-2 pitch for a single and a 3-2 lead for the Royals.

Paulo Orlando was next and hit a grounder to second base, but Daniel Murphy bobbled the ball and Orlando made it first safely. ALCS MVP Alcides Escobar followed it up with a double to score Colon, making the score 4-2.

The Mets then intentionally walked Ben Zobrist to induce a double play with one out, but Cain hit a bases-clearing double off Bartolo Colon, making it 7-2 for Kansas City. Davis closed it out for the Royals, striking Wilmer Flores out to clinch the World Series.

Catcher Salvador Perez was named World Series MVP, per MLB on FOX Sports. According to Andy McCullogh of The Kansas City Star, Royals fans can catch the championship parade on Tuesday starting at 12 noon.
