U.S. President Barack Obama met with Pope Francis at Vatican City for the first time today on March 27. The initial focus of the meeting provided an opportunity for the pair to sit down and "focus on areas where two of the world's most influential men agree and gently tread ground where they differ," according to CNN.

Obama greeted the pontiff expressing his admiration saying, "It is a great honor. I'm a great admirer. Thank you so much for receiving me."

The assembly of the two world leaders deemed pivotal due to the strained relationship between the Obama administration and Catholic leadership over the years on issues including abortion, contraception, and gay rights.

What started off as a tense meeting ended in mutual rapport. The meeting even lasted 22 minutes over the initial scheduled time.

In addition to the discussion, the world leaders exchanged gifts with the Pope offering Obama two medallions and a copy of The Joy of the Gospel, his apostolic exhortation. Obama presented the pontiff with a seed chest of fruit and vegetable seeds used in the White House Garden; a tactful move on Obama's knowledge of the Pope's garden at the papal summer residence that will open to the public.

"If you have a chance to come to the White House, we can show you our garden as well," Obama said. The pope responded "Why not," in Spanish.

The meeting concluded with Obama asking the Pope to "Please pray for me and my family. They are on this journey with me," a phrase reminiscent of how the Pope usually ends his meetings.

Obama's meeting with the Pope proved beneficial and may just be the political victory that the Obama Administration desperately needs. It is no surprise that the six-year President continues to sink in poll numbers. However, the President has won both of his elections with the support of the Hispanic Catholic vote. Perhaps the support from the Pope will serve as a way to boost Obama's poll numbers.
