World Boxing Council middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will defend his title for the first time in May. Manager Chepo Reynoso revealed that Canelo's next opponent will be named soon.

Reynoso told BoxingScene that they will release more information about Canelo's next fight before the end of the month or in early February, depending on how their scheduled meeting in the coming week will run.

"We plan to meet next week with Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar de la Hoya, Eric Gomez, Roberto Diaz, Ramiro Gonzalez, to see what what's coming up," Reynoso told ESPN Deportes via BoxingScene. "We hope to have more certainty by the end of this month or beginning of February."

Alvarez, who holds an impressive 46-1-1 record with 32 victories by knockout, became a world champion again after he scored a unanimous decision victory against former WBC middleweight rule Miguel Cotto in November.

Alvarez was supposed to make a mandatory title defense against fellow middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, who is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's title. However, WBC allowed Canelo and Golovkin to fight no later than May 31 before the mandatory title bout in order to generate more interest for the proposed bout.

Canelo, whose only loss came at the hands of Floyd Mayweather in September 2013, is being linked to a possible showdown with Gabe Rosado or Willie Monroe Jr. Reynoso said that they are considering several options but he declined to divulge names because anything could change in the upcoming meeting.

"For now we cannot say anything until we talk with Golden Boy," Reynoso continued. "We can mention names, I can mention names, but in the end it will only be speculation, it is important to know what names may are mentioned after the meeting."

As for the possible fight date, BoxingScene reported on Tuesday that Canelo's next fight will likely be scheduled on May 7, as his camp is determined to fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend yearly.

According to the report, Golden Boy Promotions reportedly made reservations at the new Las Vegas Arena for a boxing event on May 7. Nevada State Athletic Commission confirmed the reservation and executive director Bob Bennett said that the request will be tackled next scheduled hearing.

"Golden Boy Promotions has placed a hold for Canelo to fight at the new arena on May 7," Bennett said. "It will come up at the next hearing, at which time we will vote on whether or not to approve the request."
