Popular boxing commentator Al Bernstein is convinced that Gennady Golovkin will win over Saul "Canelo" Alvarez if they collide in a middleweight title unification bout later this year.

Bernstein, who has covered historic fights like the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao showdown last year, thinks that Golovkin has all the tools to be tagged as the clear favorite to win the bout. While Canelo is younger and faster than Golovkin, Bernstein is convinced "Triple G" is too big and too strong for Alvarez.

"I think Golovkin is the clear winner in that fight, it's hard for me to figure out a way that Canelo can beat him," Bernstein told On the Ropes Boxing Radio. "It could be a very interesting and exciting fight, potentially, but Canelo isn't a big middleweight and Golovkin has certainly been at 160lbs for a long time."

Golovkin, who is still undefeated in 34 professional bouts with 31 knockout victories in his career, has been campaigning in the middleweight division for his entire career.

On the other hand, Alvarez, who is the reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion, has not fought above 155 pounds. During his WBC middleweight showdown with Miguel Cotto in November, the Mexican boxing superstar weigh just 153.5 pounds for the bout.

Canelo and his camp want the fight against Golovkin to happen at 155 pounds, but Triple G and his promoters have reiterated that the bout should be at 160 pounds. Aside from Canelo's title, Golovkin's International Boxing Federation, International Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association middleweight title could be at stake.

Bernstein is hoping that the two camps will eventually find a common ground to stage the fight in September, saying that it will be another blockbuster showdown.

"Well I hope it happens this September, that would give Canelo time to gain his weight," Bernstein said. "Gennady Golovkin's problem is that nobody will fight him for the most part. I hope that fight happens."

Alvarez and Golovkin will face different opponents in the respective next fights but the two middleweight superstars will have no other choice in the second half of the year. WBC has already ruled that Canelo will lose the belt if he decides not to defend it against Golovkin, while Triple G will give up his status as No. 1 contender if he declines.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman recently expressed confidence that the Canelo-Golovkin bout will happen.

"The fight between Saul and Gennady is natural showdown. They know each other and have talked directly," Sulaiman told BoxingScene. "They already want to get inside the ring to fight. They both want the fight. We don't speculate with comments of third-parties as the WBC is guided only by facts."
