The second-biggest horse racing event is here. On May 3, horse racing fans watched California Chrome dominate the field at the Kentucky Derby. California Chrome was ridden by Mexican-born jockey Victor Espinoza. This was Espinoza's second time winning the Kentucky Derby; he won it back in 2002 as well.

Heading into the Preakness Stakes, California Chrome and Espinoza are again the favorites.

California Chrome has the highest odds of winning at 3-5, and the field will only be 10 riders as apposed to the Kentucky Derby which saw 19 riders. Social Inclusion has the second-highest odds of winning at 5-1, and riding him will be Luis Contreras. Chrome isn't just favored to win the Preakness Stakes, but he is the overwhelming favorite to come out victorious.

California Chrome will be starting off in the No. 3 post position, and historically that's not a bad spot. Ten percent of the horses that have started off in the third post have gone on to win the Preakness Stakes. Social Inclusion will be starting in the No. 8 post position, which has just a 7 percent chance of winning. Statistically speaking, the post position that has the most winners is No. 7 with seven different winners over the years. This year, Kid Cruz and jockey Julian Pimentel will be starting out of the No. 7 spot.

Another theme to watch for is the growing dominance among Latin Americans in the sport. The Kentucky Derby has been won by a Latin American born jockey 7 of the last 13 years. The Preakness Stakes has been won by a Latin American born jockey six of the last 12 years. Those jockeys include Mario Gutierrez, Jesus Castanon, Martin Garcia, Javier Castellano, Jose Santos and Victor Espinoza. Espinoza will be trying to win back-to-back races en route to a Triple Crown.

The Triple Crown hasn't been won since 1978, when Affirmed won all three major races. With California Chrome having already won the hardest of the three, the Kentucky Derby, and now being the overwhelming favorite at the Preakness Stakes, this could get very interesting. To win all three major races is extremely tough and is the greatest achievement in horse racing. The third race will be the Belmont Stakes, which will be raced on June 7, in Elmont, New York.

The Preakness Stakes starts Saturday, May 17, and will be raced in Baltimore, Maryland. Television coverage will begin on NBC at 4:30 p.m. EDT, and the post time is scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m. EDT.
