Tesla is set to roll out next-generation super chargers that will be so much faster than the ones deployed in EV charging stations today. Sources say that drivers could even top their electric cars in just a few minutes compared to charging up to 80% in 40 minutes using regular electric vehicle chargers.

Engadget reported that Tesla's current Superchargers are already faster than other EV charging stations but is not as fast as drivers and passengers would hope to be. The new breed of Superchargers will be able to allow drivers to literally charge up even when drivers are pressed for time such as driving to work.

Tesla CEO and founder, Elon Musk said that their third generation Superchargers are faster and could supply more power than the maximum 150kW per vehicle. Fred Lambert of Electrek asked if the new chargers could supply 350kW and Musk jokingly asked if Lambert was referring to a toy.

The Tesla CEO did not actually say how fast the new Superchargers would be and if these are compatible with current Tesla models. Related to Tesla's release of new Superchargers is Geneva's plan to roll out buses that use 600kW "flash-charging" to run without interrupting their routes. Superchargers will significantly increase an EV bus' productivity even taking only 4 to 5 minutes charging at the end of a day's route.

Three years ago, Inside EVs reported the possibility of  Tesla developing a Supercharger capable of sub 10-minute charging. JB Straubel, Tesla's chief technology officer then said that it is possible but said that consumers may have to wait. Straubel said then that Tesla's current Superchargers at 120kW was a crazy idea ten years ago. A "theoretical" Supercharger at 720kW is possible in time.

Faster Superchargers will also benefit Tesla financially since the shorter EVs have to charge, the sooner another driver will be able to charge his vehicle. Musk also said that solar-powered Superchargers will also be arriving soon and will ease Tesla's energy costs as well as kinder to the environment.
