Amanda Bynes has led the entertainment world down one of the longest, most bizarre rides Hollywood has ever seen. Finally, however, it appears that the former child star may finally be getting a grip on reality.

The actress, who has been involved in numerous altercations with the law, was subject to a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold after her latest instance of erratic behavior Monday night. Reports are now coming in that Bynes has reacted positively to the treatment and the cocktail of medications she has received thus far.

"We're told in the last 3 days, Amanda has stopped talking to herself and stopped insulting people. To the contrary, we're told she's become downright polite, even saying 'please' and 'thank you.'  She has shown no signs of violence," reports online gossip site TMZ.

Her latest downward spiral started after what her family describes as a hectic couple of days. They claim that Bynes literally "cabbed it" across the country, eventually winding up in Thousand Oaks, Calif. after starting out in New York City. She reportedly blew over $1 million in a short amount of time before resorting to pyromania for entertainment.

"I see this girl with her pant leg on fire and a gas can trailing fire through the driveway," Andrew Liverpool told E! News. "She was laying down right here trying to roll or do something to take off the fire from her pants. Her pants were on fire. I quickly pull over to go help her and when I got over here. She put the fire out on her leg and was rushing over to her dog."

Things became even weirder in the aftermath, when Bynes appeared to clearly not be coherent enough to know what was going on around her.

"I kicked the gas can over and moved it to the middle of the driveway so nothing else would catch on fire. And I said, 'Are you OK?' She was kind of frantic and discombobulated, and many people rushed over to try to assess the situation and when I looked back up, she was gone."

Since that time she has been under a two-week involuntary watch at a mental hospital. It is being reported that the 27-year-old is suffering from symptoms that are similar to that of schizophrenia. She is expected to appear in court on Thursday to plead her case for release, though it is likely the judge will order her to spend the full two weeks at the hospital.
