The biggest sporting event in the world continues in Qatar as World Cup favorites Argentina finally bounced back against Mexico during Saturday's play after their shocking opening loss, while Costa Rica stunned Japan on Sunday.

Canada also gets eliminated Sunday, Germany survives, Morocco upsets the mighty Belgians, and France wins against Denmark.

Saturday night's big game was the showdown between favorites Mexico and Argentina, which saw Lionel Messi tie Argentinian great Diego "God" Maradona's number of World Cup goals in a history-making performance.

On the other hand, Morocco landed a big upset against Belgium, while Germany staved off elimination against favorites Spain in a 1-1 draw. According to Bleacher Report, Belgium was No. 2 in the world rankings coming into the World Cup, but the North African nation managed to pull off the huge upset.

However, it was a heartbreaker for the Canadians, who were playing in their first World Cup since 1986. Croatia demolished them with the final score of 4-1, according to CBS Sports.

Lionel Messi Keeps World Cup Dreams Alive for Argentina Against Mexico

Argentinian soccer legend Lionel Messi has been called the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) by many. However, they also believe that he might not be able to cement that status if he does not win the World Cup.

He and Argentina have suffered heartbreak after heartbreak in the tournament, and this year seemed to be their year until Saudi Arabia beat them. However, the Argentinians were back to proper form against Mexico as the South American powerhouse took on the North American powerhouse.

The Argentinians were hungrier than ever, with Messi tying Diego Maradona's Argentina record of 21 World Cup matches and eight World Cup goals that night.

Messi was clearly in proper form, intending to cement himself as the best with a World Cup win. Argentina substitute Enzo Fernandez then cemented a win with a shot into the top corner, sealing the game 2-0.

FIFA World Cup: Struggling Costa Rica Pull One Over Surging Japan

After their shock win over favorites Germany, Japan had all the momentum coming into their second match, this time against the struggling Costa Ricans, who were coming in from a one-sided demolition at the hands of former World Cup champions Spain.

Many experts were expecting Costa Rica to lose against the surging Samurai Blue. However, the Central Americans were able to halt their Asian opponents' momentum with an upset victory. The final score was 1-0.

In a reversal of what happened in Japan's match against Germany, Costa Rica scored the winning late-game goal when Keysher Fuller shot a crucial goal over the Japanese during the 81st minute of the match. That tied both teams in the group as they have three points each, according to Fox Sports.
