Lionel Messi's contract with French soccer powerhouse Paris Saint-Germaine will expire at the end of the season. He currently has a verbal agreement with the club to extend his contract, but after a showdown meeting with club bosses, he may be exploring other options.

The 2022 World Cup winner and his father, Jorge Messi, met with club officials on Wednesday, and according to The Express, they could not come to an agreement.

The Paris-based team is determined to keep the legendary Argentinian and supposedly wanted a quick decision from him back in January. However, the team is currently facing Financial Fair Play issues that may have hampered the talks.

There are currently plenty of rumors surrounding Messi, as it seems that he is now exploring his options. One of the frontrunners is David Beckham's Inter Miami.

Is Lionel Messi Returning to FC Barcelona?

Currently, Lionel Messi is "'increasingly uncertain" about staying with Paris Saint-Germaine, with his meeting concluding with no contract agreement. However, there is a lot of speculation that he will be returning to the place where his professional career began, FC Barcelona.

However, Jorge Santos, Messi's father, shot down this specific rumor entirely, according to Marca. The elder Messi stated that the club has not yet reached out to them, and Barcelona is not yet in their plans.

He also acknowledged that he does not see his son returning to the Catalan giants again, stating, "I don't think Leo will play for Barcelona again. We haven't spoken to Laporta and there is no offer."

Currently, FC Barcelona is facing some financial trouble. They may be at the top of the La Liga standings at the moment, but their club finances have been pretty bad. This means that they may not even be able to afford Messi, let alone offer him a contract that would be better than what PSG may have offered him.

Paris Saint-Germaine Locker Room Is Unhappy After Neymar Spat

PSG is also in another dire situation, as frustrations within the team may be boiling over. On paper, they may be the best team in the world, with their dangerous spearhead of Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe being an offensive juggernaut. However, this star power has so far not resulted in success in the Champions League.

Currently, PSG sits atop Ligue-1, but that lead is not comfortable following the team's recent loss against Monaco. Marseilles is now catching up and is confident of winning the league entirely. With the current locker room spat, that lead is even more precarious.

According to The Express, the spat came following the loss to Monaco, with sporting director Luis Campos having an emotional rant in the locker room, saying that the players lacked aggression. However, Brazilians Neymar and Marquinhos reportedly pushed back against Campos and defended their teammates. Neymar himself acknowledged this happened.

There are also reports that Neymar also wants out. This means that the three-headed monster that is the PSG frontline may soon be gone next season. Like Messi, Neymar's future in the team is in doubt.
