The High-Speed Chase that Kills 2 Wisconsin Boys

The incident unfolded shortly before midnight in Waukesha County when a deputy attempted a traffic stop in Pewaukee due to the vehicle's high speed and lack of displayed plates, per ABC News.

The driver initially stopped but quickly fled at a high rate of speed before deputies could make contact.

Two deputies pursued the vehicle for a short distance, culminating in a crash and rollover in the town of Delafield, approximately 3 miles from the initial traffic stop.

Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson, in a news conference, expressed the rapidity of the events, noting that deputies had no opportunity to engage with the driver as the vehicle sped away beyond their visibility.

Investigation into Pursuit and Crash

The Washington County Sheriff's Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol will conduct a thorough investigation into the pursuit and crash to assess whether the deputies adhered to established policies during the chase, Cleveland.com reports.

Despite this, Severson affirmed the department's belief that the deputies acted appropriately.

According to Severson, the department is of the view that law enforcement officers are prompted to engage in pursuits when individuals opt to evade them.

He emphasized that law enforcement does not undertake actions that would intentionally provoke individuals to flee.

"This kind of situation is preventable," Severson said, underlining the importance of individuals choosing not to elude law enforcement and expressing deep sorrow for the loss of two young Wisconsin boys due to wrong decisions.

"The fact that two children lost their lives this morning as the result of really bad decision-making is very saddening to all of us," Severson said.

The driver wanted on a felony possession of a firearm charge, is expected to face multiple charges related to the crash.

These charges may include fleeing and eluding causing death and reckless driving causing death.

While Severson did not specify the exact charges, he indicated the severity of the legal consequences the driver may face for the tragic outcome of the pursuit.
