A 9-year-old girl died on Tuesday from critical injuries after being hit by a plane that crashed landed in Venice on Sunday. Her father was also hit during the accident and died at the scene.

According to BBC, Oceana Irizarry was walking with her father Ommy along Caspersen Beach Sunday afternoon when the 1972 Piper Cherokee plane made an emergency landing and struck them.

The girl was airlifted to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, where she died Monday evening, according to a spokesman for the medical examiner in Lagos, Florida, reported the Los Angeles Times.

Ommy, a 36-year-old Army first sergeant stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia, was visiting the area to celebrate his ninth anniversary with his wife.

In a 911 call, a man described the little girl's condition to a dispatcher, saying, "She's breathing a little right now. Rapid pulse and difficult breathing. She's unconscious."

Following Oceana's death, family members released a statement thanking first responders and doctors.

"There are no words to describe the suffering we are experiencing," the family said. "Our precious Oceana has joined her daddy in heaven."

The family also described Ocean as a "natural artist who loved to learn. She was looking forward to the 4th grade," reads the statement. "Ommy, a Sergeant First Class in the Army, was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, friend and soldier. He lit up the room whenever he entered and was devoted to his family."

"The Venice airport had alerted Sarasota County sheriff's deputies at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday that a small plane was in distress and attempting to land on the beach," reported the Los Angeles Times.

The pilot of the plane was identified by sheriff's officials as Karl Kokomoor, 57, and his passenger was David Theen, 60. Both men are from Englewood, and neither one was injured, the authorities said.
