Age is just a number, after all.

64-year-old Diana Nyad's lifelong dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida came true over the weekend when she successfully completed the 110-mile journey in 52 hours and 54 minutes.

Nyad emerged from the water in Key West, Fla. as the only person to have made it from Cuba without a shark cage, at least as far as documented records are concerned. It was reported that Nyad was dazed and her words were slurred upon exiting the water after swimming for more than two consecutive days in the jellyfish and shark-infested waters. She had attempted the challenge many times before but was derailed by jellyfish stings and other issues.

After arriving in Florida, Nyad's words of wisdom were simple and straightforward.

"One is, we should never ever give up. Two is, you're never too old to chase your dreams. Three is, it looks like a solitary sport, but it's a team,"

It was a team, all right. Nyad's team used an electrical field around her to keep the sharks away and kayakers kept up with her every stroke in the water. According to the Associated Press, she paused for nourishment but never left the water at any point in time during the trip.

"The phrase I decided to use was 'find a way,'" she said on ABC's Good Morning America.

The swimmer was immediately placed on a stretcher after she arrived and was brought to a hospital for an examination. The AP said doctors believed she would make a full recovery from any health issues suffered during the trip.
