The highly anticipated showdown between Miguel Cotto and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is unlikely to happen this year, but Canelo's manager, Jose Reynoso, said that the fight will eventually happen.

In an interview with BoxingScene, Reynoso admitted that they have already ruled out a fight against Cotto later this year. But if Alvarez wins in his next fight in November and Cotto successfully defends his crown in December, Reynoso said that the bout will likely take place in May next year.

"Everyone wants to see Canelo go against Cotto, but if it doesn't happen his career will still continue forward. It will definitely not happen this year, but sooner or later we will see their faces meet," Reynoso said.

Alvarez, who holds an impressive 44-1-1 record with 31 knockouts, is coming off two-straight victories, successfully bouncing back from his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2013.

The 24-year-old Mexican boxing superstar, who won against Alfredo Angulo in March and Erislandy Lara in July, is looking to earn another big-money fight or another title shot, but his camp is expected to look for another tune-up fight before going all-in in May next year.

On the other hand, Cotto, who is the reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion, is scheduled to defend his title on Dec. 13, but the Puerto Rican is not expected to go up against one of the top contenders in the division so as not to put the proposed May 2015 fight against Canelo in jeopardy.

Previous reports indicated that Cotto, who scored a 10th-round knockout win against Sergio Martinez in June, will likely face Andy Lee in his next fight.

Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum said that Lee's promoter, Lou DiBella, recently called him about the possible fight. Arum said that he likes the idea of pitting Cotto against Lee, but the famed promoter insisted that the four-division champion and his camp have the final say on what they intend to do for the December fight.

"Lou DiBella did call me about Andy Lee, and I said, 'Yeah, that would be a good fight.' But, again, the ball is in Cotto's court. It's Cotto's date, and he'll decide what he wants to do," Arum said via RingTV.
