One month and two days after Ariel Castro was sentenced to "life plus 1,000 years" for kidnapping 3 women and holding them captive for a decade, the notorious Cleveland kidnapper committed suicide.

The 53-year-old Castro, who was also found guilty for murder after forcing one of the women to abort her pregnancy, was found hanging in his jail cell shortly after 9 p.m. when guards were making their rounds; prison personnel tried to resuscitate him and he was immediately transferred to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Franklin Coroner Dr. Jan Gorniak, said "the findings were consistent with the use of a bed sheet." An official autopsy confirmed that this was the cause of death.

Castro's attorneys complained that authorities refused to allow him to see a psychologist.

"We requested the opportunity for our retained independent psychologist to see and evaluate Mr. Castro in both the county jail and in the prison reception center, where he was being held," defense attorney Jaye Schlachet said to Reuters. "We were denied and thwarted in each of our attempts by the state and county."

Castro, a former bus driver who was finally fired from his job in 2012, made national headlines this year when it was found that he lured Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight into his car by offering them a ride.

Knight was abducted in 2002 at age 21, while Berry was abducted a day before her 17th birthday in 2003. Castro kidnapped DeJesus a year later when she was only 14 years old. Berry also gave birth to a daughter while she was being held in Castro's home; the 6-year-old was rescued along with them on May 6 when neighbors heard Berry's call for help.
