The fifth-seeded Sharapova kicked off her campaign with a 6-4, 6-0 win against former doubles partner and compatriot Maria Kirilenko in one of the two night matches at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday.

With the win, Sharapova, who is looking to win her sixth Grand Slam title this year, improved her night record at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to 17-0, but the Russian star said that she is unsure whether or not playing at night really benefits her.

Second-seeded Halep will also take court as she is set to go up against Jana Cepelova of Slovakia.

The 22-year-old Romanian loss in the opening set of her first-round showdown against Danielle Rose Collins of USA, 6-7(2), but dominated in the next two sets to advance to the next round.
