In a Monday press conference, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi tapped Rep. Ben Ray Luján to head the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Pelosi said Luján is, "a dynamic and forward-looking leader with the fresh energy and ideas that House Democrats need for victory in 2016," NBC News reports.

"Congressman Luján has the bold vision and determined leadership to deliver Democratic wins in difficult districts -- and I am confident he will prove a tireless champion for our members and candidates across the country," she added.

The DCCC is charged with electing Democrats to the United States. The 42-year-old Luján will be the first Latino to head the DCCC, giving hope that he will also inject some youth into the House Democratic leadership heading into the 2016 election cycle.

Pelosi also announced that outgoing DCCC chair Steve Israel will manage policy and communications in a newly created position, according to Huffington Post.

Mid-term elections knocked Democrats down to 12 less seats, giving Republicans the most seats they held in nearly seven decades.

Lujan hopes that there is a better turn out for the 2016 presidential election.

"We will be on the offensive to put the majority in play," he told reporters.

He said he wants to take lessons from the recent elections and get right to work.

Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro will be co-chairman of the Steering Committee, and Maryland Rep. Donna Edwards will be policy co-chair.

Luján is well versed in politics. According to Fox News Latino, he has held several public service positions, including Deputy State Treasurer, Director of Administrative Services and Chief Financial Officer for the New Mexico Cultural Affairs Department. The young politician was elected to the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission in 2004. In 2008, he won the spot to serve in New Mexico's third congressional district.

Luján's father was the former state House speaker in New Mexico from 2001 until his death in 2012.
